Have you heard about the CEREC system? This advanced dental system makes it possible to have a new dental crown in just one visit! Really!
But how is that possible, and how is a CEREC crown different from getting a traditional crown?
You’ll want to know the answer because making the right choice for your next crown could save you time and money.
Here’s what you need to know.
What is CEREC?
CEREC is an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It’s a leading-edge system that allows our Manassas and Centreville dentists, Dr. Bobby Bawa and Dr. Anoop Bawa, to create a customized dental crown right at their offices instead of sending it to an outside lab.
The significant advances made in the fields of computer technology and digital imaging are being utilized by the dental profession to help you have dental visits that are quicker and more efficient.
The CEREC system takes advantage of both of those advanced technologies. It relies on CAD/CAM technology: computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture.
How is CEREC different from traditional crowns?
With traditional crowns, your procedure would go something like this:
- You’ll have an exam to determine a crown is the best solution for your tooth’s health.
- Next, another visit is scheduled to prep the tooth for a crown. The dentist takes bite impressions and places a temporary crown.
- The impressions are sent to a lab to manufacture your crown, which may take two to three weeks.
- Finally, another visit is made to have the finished crown set permanently in place.
With the CEREC system, your crown procedure starts the same way, but then changes radically:
- First, our restorative dentistry experts determine a crown is the best option for you.
- We do any needed prep work on the tooth, and we take 3D digital impressions that are sent electronically to a computer. Our Centreville and Manassas dentists check the design and choose a color that will blend in naturally with your smile.
- This digital design is beamed to our in-office milling machine to carve out a new crown, according to the template computer-designed by our dentists.
- The crown is polished and permanently placed. The whole procedure usually takes between 90 minutes to two hours to complete!
You can see why CEREC crowns are also known as same-day crowns!
